Salve Readers! Oggi voglio parlarvi di un opera di uno dei miei autori preferiti: "Lo Scarabeo d'Oro" di Edgar Allan Poe.

Hi readers! Today I want to talk you about a work of one of my favorite authors: "The Gold-bug" by  Edgar Allan Poe

Il libro che ho letto era un edizione Adelphi (quindi come al solito bella e curata nei dettagli) con il

testo inglese a fronte.

Parto subito affermando che per chi come me è alle prime armi con i libri in inglese questo non è secondo me il testo migliore con il quale iniziare: questo perché ad esempio quando ci sono i dialoghi con Jupiter (uno dei personaggi principali nella storia), questo parla in modo non corretto ed a una persona che l''inglese non lo mastica molto bene viene messa in grande difficoltà. Comunque al di là di questa breve speculazione linguistica procediamo all'analisi dell'opera.

The book I read was an Adelphi edition (therefore, as usual, beautiful and accurate in details) with the English text in front.
I'm leaving right away saying that for people like me who are beginners with books in English this is not in my opinion the best text with which to start: this is because, for example, when there are talks with Jupiter (one of the main characters in the story) he speaks incorrectly and to a person who does not chew English very well is put in great difficulty. However, beyond this brief linguistic speculation, we proceed to the analysis of the work.

La storia si svolge in Carolina del Sud, nell'isola di Sullivon e racconta di come la sorte di William Lengrad (il protagonista) viene travolta dalla scoperta casuale di uno scarabeo color oro.

I fatti della storia sono narrati in prima persona da un amico di William che viene coinvolto parzialmente nella storia.
The story takes place in South Carolina, on the island of Sullivon and tells how the fate of William Lengrad (the protagonist) is overwhelmed by the casual discovery of a gold-colored scarab.
The facts of the story are told in the first person by a friend of William who is partially involved in the story.

Perché leggerlo? Perché è un mistero avvincente in cui ci immergiamo in una storia dove troviamo casate in rovina e isole del tesoro, crittogrammi ed enigmi vari.

A mio avviso quest'opera è molto diverso dai soliti racconti di Poe a cui siamo abituati (horror, polizieschi o satirici) però il grande scrittore emerge anche in questo racconto secondo. Troviamo poi tematiche già affrontate da Poe come il metodo della deduzione già visto in altri racconti dell'autore (ad esempio I Delitti della Rue Morgue), i crittogrammi ed altri elementi misteriosi.

Why read this book? Because it is a compelling mystery in which we immerse ourselves in a history where we find houses in ruins and islands of treasure, cryptograms and various puzzles.
In my opinion this work is very different from the usual stories of Poe to which we are accustomed (horror, police or satirical) but the great writer also comes out in this story. However, we find the themes already addressed by Poe as: the method of deduction already seen in other stories of the author (for example, The Murders in the Rue Morgue), cryptograms and other mysterious elements.

Insomma, se siete fan di Poe non perdete quest'opera, varrà sicuramente la pena.

So, if you are a Poe fan, do not miss this opera, it will certainly be worth it.
