Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful little book that I discovered a few years ago, it is a minor work of Jack London, called "A Piece of Steak" and is about 30 pages around. You can read it all in one breath, a pleasant and melancholic story.
The book is the story of a boxer called Tom King, now in the end of his carreer, who lives togheter his family in poverty, and he must face a fight against a young man more fit than he is to continue to survive.
The book plays on the fact that old Tom wanted a steak before the match, because this would give him the energy needed to make the match the best, but he does not even have the money for that.
Why read this book? The work is not just the description of this match, but it is the comparison between youth and old age, in fact the young boxer embodies the values of energy, strength, and vigor; While Tom is the emblem of experience, rationality and technique.
Finally, a nice book to read comfortably under the umbrella that at the same time entertains us and makes us reflect.

Oggi voglio parlarvi di un bellissimo libricino scoperto un paio di anni fa, è un opera minore di Jack London, si intitola "Una Bistecca" ed è di una 30ina di pagine circa. Lo si legge tutto di un fiato, una storia piacevole e malinconica.
Il libro è il racconto di un pugile di nome Tom King, ormai all'epilogo della sua carriera, il quale vive insieme alla sua famiglia in una condizione di indigenza, e deve affrontare un combattimento contro un giovane molto più informa di lui per continuare a sopravvivere.
La storia gioca sul fatto che il vecchio Tom aveva voglia di una bistecca prima dell'incontro, perché questa gli avrebbe dato l'energia necessaria per fare il suo match al meglio, ma non ha i soldi neanche per questa.
Perché leggere questo libro? L'opera non è solo la descrizione di questo match, ma è il confronto fra giovinezza e vecchiaia, infatti il giovane pugile, incarna i valori l'energia, la resistenza, e il vigore; mentre Tom è l'emblema dell'esperienza, della razionalità e della tecnica.
Insomma, un bel libro da leggere comodamente sotto l'ombrellone che contemporaneamente ci intrattiene e ci fa riflettere.
