La storia è abbastanza semplice, William Stoner non avrà mai una vita avventurosa nel senso stretto del termine, nelle pagine del libro non troveremo esotiche imprese alla Conrad, non andrà mai in guerra, non fu mai un attivista e sopravvisse abbastanza bene alla crisi americane, si sposò ed ebbe una figlia. Insomma, non proprio il personaggio più interessante della storia, ci basta leggere la prima pagina del libro per sapere la vita che farà. Uno scritto particolare, un americano diverso. Non troverete dei pionieri alla Jack London, complotti apocalittici e personaggi sfrontati alla Clive Cussler o una lirica "patriottica" alla Whitman; troveremo solo un piacevole e fluida narrazione introspettiva che andrà a costruire uno dei personaggi più tridimensionali che abbia mai letto.
The story is simple enough, William Stoner will never have an adventurous life in the strict sense of the word, in the pages of the book we will not find exotic adventures like in Conrad, he will never go to war, he was never an activist and he survived quite well the American crisis, he got married and had a daughter. In short, not really the most interesting character in history, we just read the first page of the book to know the life that will do. A particular writing, a different American. You will not find pioneers at Jack London, apocalyptic plots and "cool" characters like in Clive Cussler or a "patriotic" lyric at the Whitman; we will find only a pleasant and fluid introspective narration that will build one of the most three-dimensional characters I have ever read.

William Stoner è un uomo reale, in carne ed ossa, un uomo di vecchio stampo, appartiene a quella generazione che "andavano avanti" come direbbe Philipp Roth, ma non è solo questo.
William è pura etica del lavoro, passione, sopportazione e a tratti tanta debolezza.
I personaggi di questo libro raccontano un epoca che difficilmente possiamo capire così bene.

Perché leggerlo? perché è un libro che arriva a costruire l'intimità di un personaggio esaltando la sua umanità, anche il lato peggiore, quello più debole, delle scelte difficili non fatte, proprio per questo lo ameremo e lo odieremo: per la sua umanità.
Questo libro ci insegna due cose, una sulla scrittura e l'altra sulla vita: la prima è che non occorre avere una storia maestosa per scrivere un bellissimo libro; mentre la seconda è che anche le vite apparentemente più semplici si possono in realtà nascondere sfumature tutt'altro che banali.
Why read this book? because This book builds the intimacy of a character extolling his humanity, even the worst side, the weaker, difficult choices not made, for this we will love and hate him: for his humanity.
This book teaches us two things, one on writing and the other on life: the first is that you do not need to have a majestic story to write a beautiful book; while the second is that even the apparently simpler lives can hide nuances that are anything but trivial.
