Bill Bryson The Lost Continent/America perduta

Hi Guys,

This morning I was drinking coffee when I have heard that the small island of Puerto Rico will become an integral part of the United States of America. I began to imagine the small Caribbean island, the palm trees, the beaches, the small towns ... it will be America.

Then I thought about America, but not of America's great centers, not at New York, Los Angeles, Miami. I thought of the small rural centers, I immediately thought of Des Moines. Yes, Des Moines.

A little center in Iowa. I thought of this town (among other things is the capital of the state), because in this center begins the journey of writer Bill Bryson.

B. Bryson, in my opinion is the right writer to start talking about travel books on this Blog.

Why should you read Bryson?

Because in his book Lost Continent, he did a travel on the road in real american style, lonely in great american routes, with an old shattered Chevrolet. He describes wonderful natural environments like the soft hills of New Hampshire; he makes you want to see the corners of America you thought were not possible to exist, like when he tells about the beautiful island of Mackinac; Bryson tells the socio-cultural circumstances of an unknown America to us: Amish communities, Mormons, Indians; the writer opens our eye

s to the strong social disadvantage of the poorest social layers.

Everything is seasoned with sarcasm, irony and a bitter critical sense. A travel that presents us another America. It deserves to be read. If you are a lover of this Nation, with his better and worse aspect, you can not miss this story.

Stamattina, stavo bevendo il caffè quando ho sentito che la piccola isola di Porto Rico diventerà parte integrante degli Stati uniti d'America. Ho cominciato a immaginare la piccola isola caraibica, le palme, le spiagge, le piccole città... sarà America.

Poi ho pensato all'America, ma non all'America dei grandi centri, non a New York, Los Angels, Miami. Ho pensato ai piccoli centri rurali, subito mi è venuta in mente Des Moines. Si, Des Moines!

Un piccolo fazzoletto di terra nell'Iowa. Ho pensato a questa cittadina (che tra l'altro è la capitale dello stato), perché in questo centro inizia il viaggio dello scrittore Bill Bryson.

B. Bryson secondo me è lo scrittore giusto con cui iniziare a parlare di libri di viaggio su questo Blog.

Perché dovreste leggere Bryson? Perché nel suo libro, America perduta fa un viaggio on the road in puro stile americano, solitario nelle grandi strade americane, con una vecchia Chevrolet scassata. Ci descrive ambienti naturali meravigliosi come le morbide colline del New Hampshire; ti fa venire voglia di vedere angoli d'America che pensavi inesistenti, come quando racconta della stupenda isola di Mackinac; racconta circostanze socio-culturali di un America a noi europei sconosciute: comunità di Amish, mormoni, indiani, ci fa intravedere il forte disagio sociale degli strati sociali più poveri.

Il tutto condito con sarcasmo, ironia e un pungente senso critico. Un viaggio che ci presenta un'altra America. Merita di essere letto. Se siete amanti di questo Stato, con i suoi e suoi contro non potete perdere questo racconto.
